Airport janitor arrested for stealing bag in Manila
The janitor reportedly took a Chinese national's bag and threw away the clothes inside and kept the mobile phone for himself
A janitor was arrested after stealing a passenger’s bag at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila, Philippines on July 28.
Rocky Catapang took a bag that was left at the NAIA Terminal 1 Departure Area. The bag, which contained a mobile phone, clothes and documents, belonged to a female Chinese national, Philippine News Agency reported.
The passenger reported that her bag was missing to the Manila International Airport (MIAA) Authority. Erick Mejia, the officer-in-charge of the MIAA Intelligence and Investigation Division, said they were able to track down Catapang through security footage around the area.
Catapang was arrested and initially denied stealing the bag, saying he had returned it to a passenger who claimed it was theirs. However, Catapang later admitted he stole the bag and threw away the clothes. He also admitted he took the mobile phone and used it as his own.
Mejia said Catapang was fired from the Philcare Janitorial Services and it is not known whether the Chinese national will file a case against him.
