‘Apparition’ told father to cut off his toddler’s ears, say police
Mentally unstable East Delhi man, 35, charged with attempted murder
In a bizarre incident, a 35-year-old man was arrested for allegedly cutting off his three-year-old daughter’s ears on Thursday, according to media reports.
The police said Amrit Bahadur, who lives in East Delhi, told them he was obeying the orders of a supernatural power that asked him to “donate the girl’s ears to him, or else he would take her to hell with him.”
The Hindustan Times quoted a police officer as saying, “He was hallucinating. He said he thrashed the girl because the ghost told him that he would kill her and take her along if he does not make her cry. He admitted that he started thrashing the girl first, but then the ghost directed him to chop off her ears. He did as directed.”
When his wife intervened, Amrit reportedly beat her as well and detained her and their five children on the terrace. Hearing loud cries, his neighbors alerted the police, who arrested Amrit and took the toddler to a trauma center, India Today reported.
During interrogations, Amrit blamed his actions on his hallucinations and his wife corroborated his version of events.
According to police, Amrit had been deeply distressed since the loss of his one-year-old daughter two months ago and frequently hallucinated.
Amrit was charged with causing grievous injury with a dangerous weapon, attempted murder and child abuse.
