Ban on labor deployments may be extended to other countries
Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said the Philippines would only allow labor deployments to countries where workers were being protected from abuses
The ban on domestic work in Kuwait may be extended to other countries in the Middle East if they fail to demonstrate that Philippine nationals are being protected, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said.
“We will impose the same restrictions (as in Kuwait) and will consider a deployment ban if strengthened protection for our workers is not assured,” Bello said in a statement.
He was speaking after reports on Tuesday that domestic workers were being auctioned off to different employers in Saudi Arabia.
Bello said deployments were likely to be prohibited in countries with frequent cases of abuse and maltreatment of Filipino workers, Philippine Canadian Inquirer reported.
“The minimum demand of President Rodrigo Duterte is that we will only deploy in countries where our workers are properly and effectively protected,” he said.
