Cheung Chau residents may enjoy discounts with a new monthly ferry pass being introduced in July, the Transport Department told the Hong Kong Legislative Council on Saturday.

The department is also designing multi-journey ferry tickets for residents who do not have a monthly pass, Sing Tao Daily reported, citing Commissioner for Transport Ingrid Yeung Ho Poi-yan at the LegCo’s Finance Committee meeting.

The committee approved funding of more than HK$410 million (US$52.8 million) to help six outlying-island ferry routes stay financially viable, reducing the need for fare increases during the upcoming three-year license period starting in July.

The six routes comprise journeys between Central and Cheung Chau, Peng Chau, Mui Wo, Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan, and the inter-island services.
