False child abduction rumors spark deadly mob violence
Six people murdered but police find no evidence of kidnapping ring
After rumors circulated about a child abduction ring in the Indian state of Jharkhand, three people were beaten to death in Seraikela district on Thursday morning and three more were killed in Jamshedpur district later in the evening.
Though it was not clear when or how the rumors started, reports suggested that people had become increasingly worried about them and reacted violently.
“They are suspecting anybody unknown to them [to be] a child kidnapper,” a police official was quoted as saying. He added that officers had been injured while trying to stop a mob in Seraikela.
A senior police officer said that they had not received any reports about kidnapped children in the two districts where officers were deployed to thwart violence.
