China develops first airborne early warning plane for aircraft carriers
Plane marks huge step towards having fully capable carrier wing
Popular Science reports that China has developed the KJ-600, a carrier-based early warning and control plane that can help fill a critical gap against the US Navy.
Built by the Xian Aircraft Corporation, the KJ-600 weighs 25-30 tons and is powered by twin-engine FWJ-6C turboprop engines. It also carries a large radar dome on top of its fuselage. It’s designed to perform the same role as the US Navy’s E-2 Hawkeye early warning and control plane.
