China sends ‘Fate of the Furious’ into overdrive

Hollywood’s safety net has come through yet again as the blockbuster breaks global record, despite weak US sales

The latest installment of Universal Pictures’ “Furious” franchise broke the global debut sales record over the weekend, despite falling short of estimates in the US and Canada.

Coming to the rescue was Hollywood’s tried-and-true safety net for high-budget action flicks, China.

“Fate” set the Chinese record for fastest to pass the 1 billion yuan mark, smashing the previous record set by the domestic Chinese production “The Mermaid.”

With talk of Beijing increasing the quota of US films shown in China, Hollywood can expect to continue reaping rewards from churning out franchise action flicks, even if they are turning stale back home.
