Chinese automakers plan US factory
Great Wall Motor leading project as part of efforts to sell to the US market
Wei Jianjun, chairman of Great Wall Motor Co, said in a press briefing on Tuesday that the carmaker intends to set up a manufacturing presence in the US, in cooperation with two other Chinese car producers.
“The three Chinese auto companies may test the waters by building a factory together,” Wei was quoted as saying, without naming the two other firms.
Caixin reports that three other Chinese automakers — Geely, Guangzhou and Chery – have all previously announced plans to enter the US market. Geely and Guanzhou both said they were unaware of the plans, while Chery declined to comment.
Wei described the move as “brand-building to sell cars in the US.” It also comes under a Trump administration eager to announce new manufacturing jobs, regardless of the scale.
