MYANMAR-CHINA-UNREST-ETHNIC-POLITICS

Diplomats inspect guns allegedly seized from ethnic Kokang rebels during a recent battle between the government force and the rebels, during a tour of the Myanmar-China border town of Laukkai on September 8, 2009. The Myanmar regime has recently stepped up its decades-long campaign against minority groups, with offensives against ethnic Chinese rebels in the northeast in August and Christian Karen insurgents near the Thai border in June. In August an outbreak of fighting in Kokang, a mainly ethnic Chinese region of Myanmar's Shan state, showed tensions near the surface and earned a rare rebuke from Beijing, usually Myanmar's closest ally.
