Couple accused of forcing maid to drink cleaning water
Beauty salon owners plead not guilty to multiple charges
A Singapore couple have denied that they forced their maid from Myanmar to drink water mixed with floor cleaner, hit her head on the floor and then pour hot water over herself.
Lim Toon Leng, 43, and his wife Linda Seah Lei Sie, 38, pleaded not guilty in a Singapore court on Monday to five counts of voluntarily causing injury and another charge of causing injury with a poisonous substance, Lianhe Zaobao reported.
The couple, who own and operate a beauty salon called Anew Me in The Centrepoint shopping mall on Orchard Road, were accused of abusing the maid in an apartment in Punggol Walk between August and October 2016.
A prosecutor told the court that Seah ordered Myanmar national Phyu Phyu Mar to drink water mixed with floor cleaner and knock her head on the floor. She also allegedly told the maid to pour hot water on herself.
On October 13, 2016, Seah allegedly pulled the woman’s hair and hit her with a mobile phone, injuring her left eye, left hand and forehead. On the same day, Lim allegedly punched the victim twice on her forehead.
The maid’s injuries were seen the following day by a female staff member, who notified the police.
