Devoted husband arrested over death of bedridden wife
The 80-year-old man found it harder to care for his wife who was paralyzed from a stroke three years ago and the couple had no other relatives
An 80-year-old Hong Kong man was arrested on Tuesday for the suspected killing of his bedridden wife who had been disabled from a stroke in their Shau Kei Wan home.
Wong Kwok-man called police at 9am, saying that he had killed his 76-year-old wife, Lam Mei-kam during the early hours of Monday morning in their flat in Yiu Ming House, Yiu Tung Estate, Wen Wei Po reported.
Neighbors described Wong and Lam as a loving couple and had no other family after their only son committed suicide at the age of 23 about 10 years ago.
Three years ago, Lam had a stroke and had been living in an elderly home in the neighborhood, but she was unhappy, Apple Daily reported. This prompted Wong to shoulder the responsibility of taking care of his paralyzed wife at home.
Preliminary police investigation showed that Wong, who was the sole caretaker, felt unable to care of his disabled wife, especially as his own health was failing.
Police removed a 30cm bamboo back scratcher by the bed for further investigation.
