Domestic workers in Hong Kong earn more in upmarket areas
Some employers in Happy Valley and Sai Ying Pun offer up to HK$8,500, a survey showed, which was considerably higher than other areas
Domestic workers earn more if they are employed by families on the southern side and in Central district on Hong Kong Island, a survey has found.
The survey, conducted by an online employment agency, showed that the average salary offered by employers in the city reached HK$4,799 (US$611), 5.5% more than the previous survey in 2017 at HK$4,545.
Meanwhile, the consumer price index in Hong Kong increased 2.5%. This means that domestic helpers have more to save, to send to their families or to improve their daily lives in Hong Kong.
HelperChoice, an online platform that matches employers with domestic workers at no cost to the helpers, analyzed data from about 2,000 recent job ads posted by users from Oct. 1, 2017 to July 31, 2018.
Employers on the southern side of Hong Kong Island offered the best average salary at $5,077, followed by Central and the western district, Lantau Island, Sai Kung and Wan Chai.
Some employers in Happy Valley and Sai Ying Pun offer up to HK$8,500, the survey showed. All these areas are regarded as affluent where wealthy families and international residents live. They are willing to pay more as they require a high level of skills and experienced domestic workers.
Meanwhile, the lowest average salaries are Yuen Long, Northern District in the New Territories, followed by Wong Tai Sin, Tsuen Wan and Kwun Tong in Kowloon, where the average wage is HK$4,562, 3.4% higher than the current minimum wage for the domestic worker of HK$4,410.
The survey also found that 70% of the jobs offer private rooms, 16% a room shared with a child and 10% a room shared with another domestic worker.
The Hong Kong government will announce a review of the minimum wage for domestic workers at the end of September.
