Duterte says kiss with Filipina in Korea was ‘showbiz’
President Rodrigo Duterte said he is willing to step down from his position if enough women sign a petition
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte defended the kiss he demanded from a Filipino migrant worker during his official visit in South Korea.
The president said the kiss was just for entertainment and that he and the Filipina, who was initially reluctant and said she had a husband, enjoyed it. Duterte said there was no malice involved in the kiss, AFP reported.
“We enjoyed it. It was a showbiz thing and everybody enjoyed it,” Duterte said.
However, women’s groups and opposition lawmakers accused the president of abusing his position and misogyny after the incident went viral on social media. Duterte said he is willing to step down from his presidency if complaints mounted.
“I think if all women here would sign a petition for me to resign, I will resign,” he said.
President Duterte met with the Filipino community in South Korea on Sunday, when he offered to give a book to a Filipina worker in exchange for a kiss on the lips. Video clips of the incident went viral and sparked outrage on social media.
