Elderly man safe after getting lost for 22 hours on mountain
Retiree aged 71 got lost and fell down a slope while hiking from Sha Tin to Wong Tai Sin; a big search failed to find him; but he eventually got home
A 71-year-old local man was found safe after getting lost and trapped on a mountain while hiking alone from Sha Tin in the New Territories to Wong Tai Sin in Kowloon on Tuesday.
A retiree surnamed Ho left home at 2pm and started his hike at Hung Mui Kuk in Sha Tin, Apple Daily reported.
However, he lost his way in the middle of his hike and slipped down a slope. He tried many times to look for a way out but failed.
At 10pm, after many hours struggling, Ho called his wife, who immediately informed police.
The battery on Ho’s mobile had run out, but the last signal indicated that he was somewhere around Piper’s Hill, north of Cheung Sha Wan. However, the teams could not find Ho, Sing Tao Daily reported.
After sleeping overnight on the mountain, Ho decided to try his best to find a way out by himself. It took him all day – he finally walked down the mountain in the evening and got a bus back to Tai Wai, arriving home at 8pm.
Police received a report from Ho’s son and went to his home to investigate. The old man was later sent to hospital for a medical checkup.
