Ex-financial secretary Leung’s Porsche damaged in fire
The blaze broke out in one car and spread, damaging the Cayenne Leung said he bought in 2015 for HK$1.45 million
Four Porsches, including one belonging to former Hong Kong financial secretary Antony Leung Kam-chung, were damaged in a fire at the Porsche Service Center in Hung Hom, Kowloon, on Thursday morning.
At 5:30am, the fire broke out on the ground floor of the Harbour Centre at 8 Hok Cheung Street, where Porsche’s maintenance center and showroom are located, Apple Daily reported. Firemen arrived and put out the fire after about an hour.
Initial investigation showed one of the Porsches had burst into flames, with the fire spreading to three other cars.
Leung, who bought the Cayenne S E-Hybrid in 2015 for HK$1.45 million (US$185,650), had sent the vehicle to the maintenance center for a regular check, Tai Kung Pao reported.
Leung and his wife Fu Mingxia, a former diver, were in the United States when they heard of the accident. Paul Law Siu-hung, chairman of the International Professional Insurance Consulting Association, told Headline Daily that Leung could claim damages from the garage owner.
When Leung was Hong Kong’s financial secretary in 2003, he announced an increase in the motor-vehicle registration tax in March but was found to have bought a Lexus two months earlier, causing concern that he had intended to avoid his own tax. In July of the same year, he stepped down from his government position.
