Family flees dehumidifier blaze at Merbok’s height
Firefighters evacuated over 200 residents from the high-end To Kwa Wan residential building and extinguished the fire after forty minutes
A family of five and 200 other residents of a high-end private residential estate in To Kwa Wan, Kowloon, evacuated their homes after a dehumidifier unit caught fire in the early hours of Tuesday, while the No. 8 southwest storm signal was in place for Tropical Storm Merbok.
At around 2am, an operating dehumidifier caught fire in the family’s home in Tower 3 of Grand Waterfront on 38 San Ma Tau Street, Ma Tau Kok, Apple Daily reported.
The flames spread and ignited nearby objects in the flat. The smoke woke a 17-year-old Indian girl, who then alerted her family and neighbors to evacuate.
Firefighters assisted over 200 residents to leave the building, and had extinguished the blaze within forty minutes, by 2:50am. No one was injured during the incident, Sing Tao Daily reported.
The preliminary investigation has suggested that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit in the dehumidifier unit.
