Fancy sharing a cab? In Delhi and Mumbai, the answer is yes
Ola Share and uberPOOL schemes are shifting into high gear
Sharing Ola and Uber cabs has become very popular with commuters in Mumbai and Delhi, according to reports.
The Ola Share and uberPOOL schemes are drawing customers who want to save money by sharing a cab with fellow travellers heading in the same direction.
The ride-sharing option also serves to reduce both pollution and the number of vehicles on the road. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the average occupancy of vehicles is just 28%, PTI reported.
In an emailed response to a query from Asia Times, Uber said: “With the cost of shared rides up to 50% less than solo ones, the response to UberPOOL in [Bangalore] has been phenomenal. Over 25% of our total trips in [Bangalore] are shared. In one year, UberPOOL users in the city have saved around 9.36 million kilometers, which translates into saving 440,623 liters of fuel and over 1.37 million kilograms of carbon emissions.”
Over the past year, Ola has seen a 500% increase in the number of shared rides.
“The fact that millions of people are willing to share their rides gives us the confidence that we are collectively driving a positive change to reduce [our] carbon footprint,” Uber India’s Shweta Rajpal Kohli was quoted as saying.
