Filipina maid gets suspended sentence for fraud in Macau
The domestic worker was given a one-year jail term suspended for two years
A 60-year-old Filipina domestic worker who denied two counts of fraud was found guilty at the Court of First Instance in Macau on Monday. She received a one-year jail term suspended for two years, Macao Daily News reported.
The court earlier heard that the Filipina, surnamed Felipe, who is reportedly a domestic worker in Hong Kong, went to Macau in April 2014 to visit her niece. There, she told her neice that she could help arrange a job in Canada, Macao Daily News reported.
Her niece gave her a total of 11,028 Macau patacas (US$1,405).
Meanwhile, the niece introduced Felipe to a friend who also sought work in Canada. The friend gave 25,500 patacas (US$3,060) to Felipe.
After handing over the money and being unable to get in touch with Felipe, the two victims reported the case to police.
