Filipino gets life for 2004 rape and murder of student in Japan
The Filipino man, along with two accomplices who later fled to the Philippines, raped a 21-year-old university student before stabbing her to death
A Filipino man was sentenced to life in prison for the 2004 rape and murder of a university student in Japan.
On January 31, 2004 in Ami, Ibaraki Prefecture, Lampano Jerico Mori and two Filipino accomplices abducted 21-year-old Misato Harada and raped her. The three suspects then repeatedly stabbed Harada and slashed her neck, The Asahi Shimbun reported.
The victim’s body was later found on a riverbank in Miho village. The two accomplices fled to the Philippines after the incident and are currently on an Interpol wanted list.
Mori was arrested last September. On July 18 at the Mito District Court, Mori pleaded guilty to committing the crime. Prosecutors told the court that a DNA sample found on the victim almost matches that of the Filipino.
On July 25, the court sentenced Mori to life imprisonment. The court said there are no circumstances that may lead to a lighter jail term.
