Filipino maid repays debt with employers’ help in Abu Dhabi
The woman had borrowed the equivalent of nearly US$33,000 for a deal that went bad, and despite holding multiple jobs could not pay it back
A Filipino domestic worker in Abu Dhabi was able to pay off her 121,000 dirham (nearly US$33,000) debt thanks to her employers’ assistance.
Eight years ago, Madeline Palustre borrowed money from various creditors that amounted to 121,000 Emirati dirhams, but she could not pay it back, The Filipino Times reported. The borrowed money had been intended for a deal that collapsed.
In the following year, Palustre worked multiple jobs – as a cook, a teaching assistant and a saleswoman – to make ends meet, but she still could not settle her debt. She applied to work as a maid and was hired by a couple to look after their three children.
After she was hired, Palustre told her employers about her debt problem, and they decided to help her out. In return, Palustre said, she was able to settle her debt to her employers through deductions from her salary over the years.
Palustre said she would be forever grateful to her employers for their help. “More than the financial assistance, I am more thankful for their moral support during that difficult time of my life,” she said.
