Filipino maid sent to China gives evidence against employer
The domestic worker started a job in Hong Kong but was taken to Guangdong province in China three days later to work for her employer’s mother
A Filipino domestic worker, who filed a claim at the Labour Tribunal after her employer took her from Hong Kong to work in China, gave evidence at a hearing on May 9.
Irene Nolasco filed a claim for against Wei Ying, who employed her for only 13 days, sunwebhk.com reported. Nolasco arrived in Hong Kong on Nov. 20 last year, but was taken to Guangdong province in China three days later to work for Wei’s mother.
She said she did not expect to be sent there because her contract stated she would be working at Wei’s Hong Kong address. Nolasco told the tribunal she was struck on her right arm by Wei’s elderly mother, prompting her to leave the house and report to Chinese police and to Hong Kong authorities at the border.
Presiding Officer Isabella Chu adjourned the hearing indefinitely as investigations by Chinese police and the Hong Kong Immigration Department were continuing. Wei did not appear at the hearing.
Nolasco is seeking a total of HK$17,000 (US$2,165) for arrears in wages, air tickets, food and travel allowances and damages.
