Filipino man killed defending two women in Slovakia
The Filipino succumbed to his injuries a few days after he was attacked by two men
An overseas Filipino worker died after coming to the assistance of two women involved in a violent incident in Bratislava, Slovakia.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a statement that on May 26, Henry John Acorda, 36, was beaten up after he confronted two men who were harassing two women in a street in Bratislava. Acorda was later taken to the University Hospital Ruzjnov where he died on May 31.
“We mourn the loss of another of our own who by all accounts is a hero who came to the rescue of the defenseless in a land that is not even his,” foreign affairs secretary Alan Peter Cayetano said.
The DFA said the Philippine Embassy in Vienna will provide assistance to Acorda’s family in the repatriation of his remains.
A 28-year-old man named Juraj H. was arrested and charged with manslaughter, NewsNow reported. Michal Szeiff, Bratislava Regional police spokesman, said Juraj may face a jail term of seven to 12 years if found guilty.
Interior Minister Denisa Sakova condemned the attack of Juraj and hopes that the perpetrator will be brought to justice and punished accordingly.
“I highly respect the work done by the rescuers, police officers and doctors who fought to save the life of the deceased until the very end,” Sakova said.
