A towing vessel that had just left Fujairah Port and was headed to India exploded and caught fire
A Filipino seaman was killed and two others were injured after a towing vessel exploded off Fujairah, one of the United Arab Emirates.
On Monday morning, the boat with six Filipinos and two Indians aboard left Fujairah Port and was headed to India, Gulf News reported.
The boat exploded and caught fire, killing a Filipino seaman and injuring one other Filipino and an Indian. The injured Filipino suffered minor burns while the Indian was said to be in critical condition.
Felicitas Bay, Philippine labor attaché, said her office had sent a report to Manila of the incident and the victim’s recruitment agency would arrange for his repatriation to the Philippines.
The report did not mention the identity of the deceased as authorities had yet to inform his next of kin.
Bay said that as the victim was an active member of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, his family would receive death benefits amounting to 200,000 pesos (US$3,830) and 20,000 pesos as funeral benefits.
