Filipinos in UAE celebrate Philippines Independence Day
Filipinos in Dubai and Abu Dhabi attend events to celebrate the 120th Independence Day of the Philippines
The Filipino community in the United Arab Emirates celebrated the 120th Independence Day of the Philippines on Tuesday.
Flag raising ceremonies were held at the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai and at the Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi, where Filipinos gathered dressed in traditional clothing to sing the national anthem Lupang Hinirang, which means Chosen Land, Gulf Today reported.
Numerous celebratory events are planned.
At their consulates on Wednesday, Filipinos will congregate to create human formations of the Philippine national flag.
On Friday, a day-long cultural event will take place at the Dubai World Trade Center, with thousands of Filipinos are expected to attend, Gulf News reported.
Ronald Precilla, chair of the Philippine Independence Day organising committee in Abu Dhabi, said there will be events spread across the month of June.
“We are calling on our compatriots to come and participate in events that cater to all Filipinos. We should look back to where it all started and value the freedom we are enjoying now as a nation,” Precilla said.
On June 12, 1898, the Philippines declared its independence from Spain after being colonized for 333 years.
