Five injured as Discovery Bay ferry crashes into pier
A 47-year-old foreign woman was sent to North Lantau Hospital due to neck pain
Commuters headed home to Discovery Bay on the eve of Hong Kong’s “grave sweeping” festival had a rough start to the public holiday when their ferry crashed into a pier, shattering windows and injuring five passengers — though only one was sent to hospital.
As the 8pm ferry from Central was about to dock, a number of the 285 passengers on board had left their seats and were standing in the aisles, local media reported. When the vessel crashed into the pier, four people were injured by glass from the broken windows. A 47-year-old foreign woman was sent to North Lantau Hospital with neck pain.
Former RTHK correspondent Francis Moriarty, who was on the ferry, told the broadcaster that the weather conditions were fine. Initial investigations suggest engine failure, according to the Marine Department.
