French debate buoys euro
Neither candidate overwhelmed in their first one-on-one debate, but Macron’s victory looks all but set in stone
The Euro continued stronger after last night’s brawl between French frontrunner Emmanuel Macron and National Front leader Marin Le Pen.
Le Pen had the best line of the meeting (“France will be governed by a woman — either I or Madame Merkel), but a post-debate spot poll showed a 63-37 margin of victory for Macron.
Macron is done and dusted. There simply is no path to victory for Le Pen. That improves the outlook for European equities, which rose 0.9% on the Eurostoxx index this morning.
