Handelsblatt lead editorial: ‘A new chance for Europe.’
"One would like to say, 'Thank you, France!'”
Translated excerpt of Handelsblatt editorial “Eine neue Chance für Europa”:
The fact that [Emanuel Macron] doesn’t belong to the traditional political class was apparently a precondition for the unbelievable success of this politician, just 39 years young. The majority of the French want to quit the parties who have not been able to deal with thirty years of mass unemployment. But they don’t want to get into an adventure. Unlike the Americans with Donald Trump or the Britons with Brexit, they have not chosen the path into uncertainty, and refused to help the seducers of the left and the right to a triumph, even if 22% for Le Pen is a fearfully large number.
Less than an hour after the polls closed, Premier Bernard Cazeneuve as well as the lagging conservative candidate Francois Fillon called for the election of Macron. Where Fillon is concerned, this gesture cannot be overestimated. He could have taken the simple way out and called for abstention, as many of his party colleagues urged him to. But: “Abstention just isn’t in my genes. In the face of the danger of the National Front, I call upon you to vote for Emmanuel Macron, he said with surprising and courageous clarity. A grand gesture.
