At 3:30pm, a man aged around 50 was seen pointing what appeared to be a gun at a staff member at the bank on Des Voeux Road Central, RTHK reported. He ordered the staffer to put money into an orange bag he was carrying. After 16 seconds, he left with about HK$70,000.
Police with shotguns and vests searched for the suspect in Central, while some officers were deployed to the platforms between the Central and Hong Kong MTR (Mass Transit Railway) stations. A police dog was also sent to the site.
According to closed-circuit television footage widely circuited on social media, the man was dressed in black but did not wear a mask.
