HK woman dies on a hike with friends during heatwave
Hiker, aged 46, collapsed at 2pm at Kai Kung Leng; temperature reached 34C degrees in the New Territories in the afternoon; she was rushed to hospital
A 46-year-old Hong Kong woman collapsed and died on Sunday while hiking with six friends in Yuen Long in the New Territories in hot weather.
The woman surnamed Chan collapsed at 2pm in Kai Kung Leng and was later found unconscious. Her friends immediately called the police and she was sent to Pok Oi Hospital by ambulance, Sing Pao reported. However, she was later certified as dead.
After initial investigation, police said they believe the woman died of heatstroke or a hidden illness.
The Observatory had issued a warning about “very hot” weather at 6:45am that morning, and the temperature reached 34 degrees Celsius in Yuen Long district in the afternoon.
The woman is the second person to die in hiking incidents in the past two weeks, Apple Daily reported.
On August 2, a 67-year-old man felt dizzy after he finished a hiking trip to Tai Lam Country Park in Tuen Mun in the New Territories. He collapsed at a clinic and was sent to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
