Hong Kong woman, local guide fall to death at Table Mountain
Three climbers involved in abseiling accident on a mountain route below cable car station; hundreds stranded during long night-time rescue operation
A 29-year-old Hong Kong woman fell to her death and another was injured while climbing Table Mountain in Cape Town in South Africa on Monday.
A 61-year-old South African mountain guide also died in the abseiling accident which saw him fall to rocks below, Apple Daily reported.
The accident happened at about 5pm on Monday, when the three climbers abseiled down Arrow Final, which is a regular route on the mountain about 150 meters below the cable car station.
The guide somehow lost his footing and fell, dragging the 29-year-old woman, who also fell and dangled from a safety rope.
Another Hong Kong woman, aged 28, was injured and brought back by the rescue team that also brought back the bodies of the two killed. She was sent to hospital for treatment.
According to a local media report, more than 800 people were stranded for hours on the top of the mountain because a cable car had to used for the rescue operation, Xinhua News Agency reported.
The Chinese consulate in Cape Town said officials were assisting the victims’ families.
Hong Kong’s Immigration Department said officers were keeping in close contact with her family and the consulate in Cape Town to provide assistance.
