Illegal fishing crew arrested in Malaysia, boat confiscated
Ten undocumented Vietnamese fishermen detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency
A fishing boat carrying a crew of 10 Vietnamese nationals was seized by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in the early hours of Thursday.
Captain Mohamad Fauzi Othman of the MMEA said the vessel was detected by a patrol boat at about 4:25am on August 15 off the coast of Kuala Bakam.
Captain Fauzi added that the boat was Vietnamese registered and could have been fishing illegally in the waters of Malaysia, The Borneo Post reported. About 200 kilograms of fish with an estimated valued of 200,000 ringgit were seized by authorities.
Captain Fauzi added that all 10 members of the Vietnamese crew, aged between 16 and 52, had no legitimate documentation.
The MMEA reportedly detained another Vietnamese vessel fishing illegally in Malaysian waters on July 20 and six people were arrested and a haul worth 1 million ringgit was confiscated.
