INDONESIA-HEALTH-ENVIRONMENT-POLLUTION-CHEMICALS

This aerial photograph taken on June 7, 2012 in Central Kalimantan province in Indonesia's Borneo island shows an illegal gold mining operation on a riverway where miners' use of mercury pollute the river and land causing environmental devastation, posing risk to health and poisoning communities. In a desolate area of central Indonesia that was once lush rainforest, illegal miners on the frontline of a modern-day gold rush tear up the earth in the hunt for the precious metal. But the mercury used to extract it is taking an even greater toll. Kalimantan has been named as one of the most polluted places in the world in 2013.
