India smartphone sales: Xiaomi shares top spot with Samsung
Both companies now enjoy 23.5% market share each followed by Lenovo (9%) and Vivo (8.59%). India accounted for 10% of global smartphone shipments
The march of the Chinese cell phone brands in the Indian market continues unabated and they currently enjoy around 50% market share. As per the latest third quarter report released by research firm International Data Corporation (IDC), Xiaomi is now tied with market leader Samsung and has almost tripled its shipments from year ago quarter and double on sequential basis.
Both companies now enjoy 23.5% market share each, followed by Lenovo (9%), Vivo (8.59%) and Oppo (7.9%). Redmi Note 4 continues to be the best-selling smartphone in India as Xiaomi shipped approximately 4 million units in this quarter. Xiaomi’s sales through its website continued its growth and helped boost the share of overall online channel to 37% from 32% a year ago.
Samsung registered 39% sequential growth and 23% year-on-year and its best selling brands were Galaxy J2, Galaxy J7 Nxt and GalaxyJ7 Max and the trio contributed to almost 60% of Samsung’s volume.
Lenovo, which also owns the Motorola brand, made it back to the third position after two quarters on the back of an 83% increase in shipments from previous quarter. A couple of new launches under the Motorola brand reversed its internal brand share and it now contributes to two-third of Lenovo’s portfolio.
Vivo slipped to fourth position as its shipments declined after a record breaking second quarter, although it registered a healthy 153% annual growth. Vendor sales started to bounce back from September onwards as its newly-launched V7 Plus and Y69 gained strong initial traction in the market.
Oppo’s vendor shipments to India increased 40% sequentially and 81% for the same period last year. Vendor share also noticeably increased as it started participating in the eTailers platform to sell its devices.
The smartphone shipments in India reached a record high of 39 million units this quarter with a substantial growth of 40% from the previous quarter and 21% growth from the same period last year. For the first time, India’s smartphone shipments accounted for 10% of the global share.
The overall mobile phone sales registered a 30% sequential growth, the highest ever in India with more than 80 million of mobile phone shipments in the third quarter.
Several rounds of online festivals and sales in the month of August and September led to robust growth in the smartphone category. Thirteen million smartphones were billed to e-tailers, with 35% annual growth and 73% growth from the previous quarter.
