Indian student loses US$1,500 in Hong Kong phone scam
The 21-year-old fourth-year student is told to transfer amount to bank account to solve a problem with her passport
A 21-year-old Indian student studying at Hong Kong’s Lingnan University in the New Territories West district of Tuen Mun lost HK$11,700 (US$1,500) in a phone scam on Monday.
The fourth-year student received a phone call from a scammer, who spoke English, and claimed to be an officer with the Home Affairs Department. He told her that her Indian passport “had some problems.”
She was later transferred to a second person, who claimed to be an Indian government officer and asked her to transfer HK$11,700 as a “guarantee fund” to a designated bank account in India. She followed the instructions.
She did not realize that she was cheated until she talked about her experience with friends on Tuesday morning, Oriental Daily reported.
