Jail corruption scandal: whistleblower transferred
Police officer claims politician Sasikala was granted special privileges
Deputy Inspector General of Police D Roopa, who recently alleged that VIP treatment was given to controversial AIADMK politico Sasikala at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, was transferred on Monday along with DGP (Prisons) HN Sathyanarayana Rao, media reports said.
Roopa alleged in her report that Rao, along with a few other prison officials, accepted Rs2 crore (US$3,100) from Sasikala in exchange for preferential treatment at the prison, an allegation that Rao denied. PTI reported that the state government said on Monday that Rao will be replaced immediately by NS Megharikh, an additional director general of police from the Anti- Corruption Bureau.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ordered a probe after the report about Sasikala being given special privileges, including access to a kitchen, attracted public attention.
PTI reported that Roopa will now serve as commissioner for traffic and road safety.
Sasikala is serving a four-year jail term for corruption.
