Korea to consider WTO petition against China amid THAAD row
Seoul struggles to respond to informal trade pressure from Beijing.
As the US ships the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system to S Korea, the government in Seoul is scrambling to respond to China’s retaliation. China has put pressure on S Korean business to oppose the installation of THAAD, leading to the closure of Lotte retail locations in China, as well as a ban on travel tours to S Korea. In response, the government in Seoul will provide loans to companies affected by China’s actions. A senior member of the country’s ruling party also said on Tuesday that the country will actively consider filing a petition with the WTO, reported the Korea Herald.
