Looking for a brothel, police shut down gambling den instead
The raid led to the arrests of eight people playing mahjong and three women who police said were operating the den in a Taoyuan residential building
When police raided an apartment in Taoyuan City following a tip-off they expected to find an illegal brothel. Instead, they stumbled upon a clandestine gambling den, with eight people busily playing mahjong.
The operation was mounted after police were told a 33-year-old Indonesian was frequently seen taking customers to the residential building in Zhongli District, presumably to solicit sexual services.
They were actually being taken to a gambling den, allegedly run by a 53-year-old Taiwanese woman with the surname Weng, the United Daily News reported. A 42-year-old employee surnamed Chen and the Indonesian woman, a runaway migrant worker, were also arrested.
Police seized around NT$160,000 (US$5,188) of cash, an accounting book, two sets of mahjongs and other gambling equipment. They said the building was protected with security devices, including CCTV cameras, so that arriving visitors could be checked in advance.
