Lufthansa warns of Qatar Airways’ Indian ‘misadventure’

The German carrier is still haunted by its own South Asia experience

According to German airline Lufthansa, starting a domestic airline in India would be a “misadventure.” The warning comes after Qatar Airways’ recent announcement that it plans to do just that.

Lufthansa senior director for South Asia Wolfgang Will was quoted by Bloomberg as pointing out that he “did not hear up to now of any domestic airline in India making a lot of profit.”

The comments come from a company with a history of failure in the country. Lufthansa’s Indian partnership, ModiLuft, came to an end in 1996 due to an array of obstacles including disputes with creditors, oil companies and the Airports Authority of India.
