Maid jailed for 5 months for mixing Dettol in cereal drink
The defendant told the court that she was deeply troubled by Toh’s constant nagging and wished to be sacked by her employer as soon as possible
A 24-year-old domestic worker from Myanmar was jailed for five months by a district court in Singapore on Monday after pleading guilty to causing grievous harm to her employer’s mother-in-law by adding disinfectant to her cereal drink.
On the morning of April 6, the 65-year-old woman surnamed Toh prepared a cereal drink for herself and left it in the kitchen with a lid on before going into the living room to look after her seven-month-old grandchild at her daughter-in-law’s home in Tampines, The Straits Times reported.
Defendant Mya Thet Wai, who told the court she was deeply troubled by Toh’s constant nagging and wished to be sacked as soon as possible, took the opportunity to add a small cup of Dettol – an antiseptic and disinfectant – to the victim’s drink.
After feeding the baby, Toh went back to the kitchen to eat some bread and have her cereal drink. She immediately spat the liquid out and rinsed her mouth repeatedly after taking a sip of the drink.
The victim confronted the domestic worker, who denied having added something to the cup.
But Toh’s daughter-in-law reported to police that after reviewing the closed-circuit television camera at home, it had recorded the maid’s wrongdoing.
According to local legislation, the penalty for voluntarily causing grievous harm to a person is up to 10 years in jail plus a fine.
