Man with toy gun arrested after browsing Arabic website in public library
After staff called the police, it was discovered that the man – who has Asperger's syndrome – was only looking at sites relating to Middle Eastern music and history
A 26-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for possessing “weaponry” whilst browsing a website in Arabic at a public library in Shatin, in Hong Kong’s New Territories.
Oriental Daily reports that at 9am, the man – surnamed Ma – who has Asperger’s syndrome and requires regular medical check-ups, was found using a computer at Yuen Chai Kok Public Library to browse websites in Arabic while holding a “gun” – which turned out to be a toy.
Members of staff at the library called the police, who turned up and confiscated a toy gun, a bottle of airsoft pellets, a cutter knife with blades and a hand-drawn map of Nan Cheong MTR station.
After it was reported that Ma had been browsing websites about Islamic State, police called in anti-terrorist officers to investigate. According to Sing Pao, they later found that Ma had only browsed websites about Middle Eastern history and music, and nothing relating to terrorism.
On account of the blades and cutter knife in his backpack, Ma was arrested for possession of weapons and taken to the police station. New Territories South’s crime unit is investigating further.
