Hawkish statements by Federal Reserve regional bank presidents Dudley (New York), Kaplan (Dallas) and Williams (San Francisco) raised market odds of a Federal Reserve rate hike in March to 70%. Goldman Sachs economists led by Jan Hatzius wrote overnight that the Fed is “seriously considering” a hike in light of stronger economic news. Economists who look at high-frequency data, including UBS’ Data Lab and Goldman Sachs’ economics group, think that the “hard data” (durable goods orders, retail sales) understate economic strength.
