Mumbai collapse: 34 dead
Search for trapped victims called off at building site in Bhendi Bazaar
The death toll in Thursday’s building collapse in Mumbai reached 34 on Friday afternoon, according to media reports. Rescue efforts were called off at 4 pm because it was believed that all victims’ bodies had been recovered.
Twenty-four men, nine women and a 20-day-old baby were killed when the 117-year-old residential building collapsed on Thursday in south Mumbai’s Bhendi Bazaar area. Police believe the five-storey structure was weakened by recent torrential rain.
PTI reported that about 15 injured people were being treated at state-run J J Hospital.
Fire and rescue personnel said nine families lived in the crammed rooms of the structure, which had already been declared “unsafe” by the authorities.
In July, 17 people were killed when a four-storey building collapsed in Ghatkopar, a suburb of Mumbai.
