New social center will be able to hold 5,000 foreign workers
Based at a former school, the center will include a gymnasium, sports facilities, and a social services hub with counselling and mediation services
A former school building on Chin Cheng Avenue will be converted into a social center for foreign domestic workers from the middle of 2019, with a capacity for about 5,000 people once it has been renovated.
Lianhe Zaobao (Singapore) said the Foreign Domestic Worker Association for Social Support and Training was negotiating a rental agreement for the old Telok Kurau Secondary School premises, according to its president Seah Seng Choon.
It will replace a building at Jalan Bukit Merah that has a capacity for only 500 people and has become too congested. The association has about 8,000 members.
The new center will include a training academy, a social services hub with counselling and mediation services, a sports arena and a gymnasium. Counter services will be available for workers to remit money and top up their SIM cards.
