Passenger revolt grounds plane loaded with smelly durian
Overcome by the odor, passengers rallied to stop the plane from taking off and the airline capitulated
An Indonesian flight was delayed after passengers became enraged about the overwhelming smell of durian in the plane. According to the BBC, about two tonnes of durian was stored in the plane’s cargo hold.
The Sriwijaya Air Flight was flying from Jakarta to Bengkulu. Crew members assured the passengers that the smell would dissipate once the plane was airborne.
Instead, the passengers staged a mutiny.
One of the passengers, Amir Zidane, was extremely displeased with the smell and rallied other passengers to stop the plane from taking off. Ultimately, the passengers were instructed to get off the plane until the crew removed all the durian from the cargo hold.
Anies Wardhana, a spokesperson for Bengkulu airport, told the media that there had been about 2,025kg of durian. He also said that to maintain passenger comfort, future loads would have to be re-evaluated.
