Passersby take photos as hit-and-run victim lays dying
People ignored 25-year-old motorcyclist's desperate cries for help
As injured motorcyclist Prabhakar Mete lay bleeding to death on a road on Wednesday in Pune, after being hit by a driver who immediately fled the scene without stopping, callous passersby took photos and shot video, according to media reports.
The 25-year-old was hit by an unidentified vehicle near Indrayani Corner on Wednesday evening. He pleaded for help but instead of rushing him to a hospital, passersby reached for their mobile phones, but it was not to call him an ambulance.
The Times of India reported that dentist Kartikraj Kate stopped to help and took him to Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital in Pimpri, but it was too late. Mete had sustained severe head injuries and was bleeding from the nose and ears. He was declared dead at the hospital.
“When I slowed down, I saw a badly injured man lying on the road. He was soaked in blood but was conscious. He was moving his hands and legs. People had gathered around him. Some clicked photographs of the accident scene, while someone shot a video, too. But none of them was ready to help him,” Kate told the Times of India. The dentist then stopped an autorickshaw to take Mete to the hospital.
“As per our primary information, Mete’s motorcycle was hit by a vehicle, which we are yet to identify. There were some bystanders, but they don’t have any details of the vehicle. We were informed about the incident after Mete was taken to the Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital and declared dead,” Senior Inspector Bhimrao Shingade of Bhosari MIDC police station was quoted as saying.
