Philippines Senate candidate ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao retreats after comparing gays to animals
MANILA–Boxing champion Manny “the Pacman” Pacquiao has apologized for his remarks comparing homosexuals to animals.
Pacquiao, considered a boxing legend, in a recent television interview with the TV-5 group in the Philippines said human beings are worse than animals when asked about his position on same sex marriage.
“Common sense lang. Makakakita ka ba ng any animals na lalaki sa lalaki o babae sa babae? Mas mabuti pa yung hayop, marunong kumilala kung lalaki, lalaki o babae, babae,” Pacquiao said.
[It’s common sense. Would you see any animals engage in male to male or female to female [sexual relations]. Animals are better than humans [because] they recognize a male and female.]
“Kung lalaki sa lalaki o babae sa babae, mas masahol pa sa hayop ang tao,” he added.
[If people will engage in male to male or female to female sexual relations, then humans are worse than animals.]
Video goes viral
The video of Pacquiao’s interview has gone viral with netizens even calling on the public not to vote for the boxing champ.
Pacquiao is currently running for a Senate seat in the May 2016 Philippines election.
Blogger Perez Hilton, in his Twitter account said Pacquiao “has some seriously messed up views.”
In his blog, he also posted “What?! Why do people have to compare homosexuality to animals?! WHY?? Ugh.”
“Look, if your religious beliefs prevent you from accepting same-sex marriage, that’s on you. That’s your idea of propriety. But there’s absolutely no call to demonize and denigrate gay people by comparing them to animals just because their love is something you’re unable to accept,” he said.
“The sad thing here is that Pacquiao is world famous and a national hero as a boxer, so we can only guess he’ll win his election to the Senate pretty easily — and then spread this awful attitude around within his country,” he added.
Lea Salonga weighs in
Tony Award-winning theater actress and singer Lea Salonga posted “homosexuality is found in Over 450 species. Homophobia is found in only one. Which one seems unnatural now.”
Local celebrities also denounce Pacquiao for his remarks.
Comedian and TV show host Jose Marie Viceral said “the LGBT is a group of people. We are humans. But not animals. Though we’re no saints we will pray for Manny Pacquiao.”
“Ang pagpatol sa parehong kasarian ay masahol pa sa hayup? E ang pakikiapid habang ikaw ay may asawa anung kababuyan ito? Pakisagot Manny [If having sexual relations with the same sex is worst than an animal, what do you call someone having an extramarital affair, please answer Manny],” he asked.
He added that the Senate needs experts in law and politics, not “false prophets.”
Singer song-writer Aiza Seguerra who is married to a female said in her Instagram account that “you might’ve done our country proud but with your statement, you just showed the whole country why we shouldn’t vote for you.”
After causing a stir, Pacquiao posted a video in his Facebook page apologizing.
“I’m sorry for hurting people by comparing homosexuals to animals. Please forgive me for those I’ve hurt,” Pacquiao said.
” I still stand on my belief that I’m against same sex marriage because of what the Bible says, but I’m not condemning LGBT. I love you all with the love of the Lord. God Bless you all and I’m praying for you,” he added.
Pacquiao is currently a Congressman representing Saranggani District in Southern Philippines.
Pacquiao is Born Again Christian
The boxing champ is also a Born Again Christian and is a preacher.
When he visited the Court of Appeals in 2014 to preach, he confessed that he was a womanizer, gambler and drinker.
“I drink, I womanize, I gamble,” Pacquiao said of his ways before he shifted from Catholic to evangelical Christianity.
He said despite his vices, he thought he was a Godly person because he religiously goes to church three times a week and prays five times daily.
“I drink, I womanize, nagsusugal ako [I gamble]. Hindi ako nahihiya. Yan ang buhay ko noon. [I am not ashamed to say that that was my life before]. Ako pala ay hindi godly person. I only know God [I realized I am not a Godly person. But I only know God],” he said.
