Woman around the world took part in many and varied celebrations to mark International Women’s Day

Asia Times offers a selection of photographs depicting how women around the world protested and showed how they could Be Bold For Change – this year’s International Women’s Day theme – on March 8.

American women seized upon the momentum of the Womens March on Washington on January 21, the day after Donald Trump’s inauguration, once again denouncing his policies on abortion and healthcare. Many Americans skipped work or boycotted stores to demand economic fairness.

Dubbed “A Day Without a Woman” in the US, the nationwide events were modeled in part after pro-immigrant demonstrations on February 16, the latest in a series of anti-Trump protests since his November 8 election.

By having women, who make up 47% of the US civilian labor force, flex their economic muscle, organizers hope to call attention to the gender pay gap, access to reproductive health services, and Trump’s actions that have restricted abortion overseas.

A number of protests saw women strip off baring their breasts in Mexico, Peru, Chile, Brazil and Argentina. Some places were more sedate such as Canada and Denmark. Other protests were in Yemen, Turkey, India, Bolivia and more.
