Civilian ‘organ donor’ helps police bust kidney racket
Man joined forces with crime branch team after his friend went missing
Delhi police busted an illegal kidney-trading ring on Friday, arresting four suspects.
The crime branch team targeted the gang with the help of a 23-year-old man posing as a kidney donor named Jaideep Sharma.
Sharma’s friend came to Delhi in September to trade a kidney for cash but went missing after making contact with the gang, ANI reported. In order to find his friend and bust the gang, Jaideep devised a plan to entrap the criminals and later asked the police for help.
Sharma struck a Rs400,000 (US$6,200) deal with one suspect, Imtiyaz, a resident of Rajasthan’s Sikar, according to police. Sikar then took him to an address in Delhi’s Hojranj area, where he met with a woman named Sulekha Panda, who was also arrested.
The gang members allegedly introduced Sharma to a south Indian family who wanted to buy his kidney.
A police official was quoted as saying, “We are not denying the involvement of some people from the medical fraternity. We are continuously probing the case.”
