Rescuers search for Mumbai doctor who ‘fell into manhole’

Rescuers are searching for a renowned gastroenterologist who apparently fell into a manhole on Tuesday evening as heavy rains flooded Mumbai, according to media reports.
Dr Deepak Amarapurkar, 58, who works at Bombay Hospital, was last seen near Elphinstone Road station, where his driver had dropped him off, PTI reported.
A police officer said, “According to some eyewitnesses, Dr Amarapurkar fell into a manhole and the police recovered his umbrella from near it. Some people heard his voice but by the time anybody could react, the doctor had fallen.”
Manholes in Elphinstone, Dadar and nearby areas were being checked by firefighters, police officers and disaster management personnel.
A missing person case has been registered.
