Samsung hires former Pentagon info chief: Source
The defense department veteran will work with the Korean conglomerate’s US business and advise on issues including network security
Samsung Electronics has recruited a former Pentagon information chief as an adviser, industry sources told South Korea’s Yonhap news service on Wednesday.
Terry Halvorsen, the ex-US defense department chief information officer (CIO), will advise Samsung, the world’s leading smartphone maker, on its mobile communication business.
Halvorsen is said to be working with Samsung’s US unit and is expected to help its businesses in network security and other areas, Yonhap said.
Halvorsen retired from the US government in February. He previously served as the Department of the Navy CIO and also served as deputy commander at Navy Cyber Forces.
In related news, Samsung Electronics rebounded to the No. 1 spot in the global smartphone market in Q1 of this year. It did so even before the release of its latest Galaxy S8.
Data issued by tracker TrendForce says Samsung churned out 80.1 million smartphones in January-March, accounting for 26.1 percent of the global smartphone market. Rival Apple came in second with a 16.9 percent share.
